Van Buren Elementary School has an afterschool club which is modeled after the Sea Cadet organization. The club is made up of students who are interested in learning about possibilities for their future. The students meet two afternoons a week, wear uniforms and participate in classroom and hands-on activities. The program teaches responsibility for oneself and others, first aide, career opportunities and the need to stay in school to achieve their goals. The group has visited a local fire station, having hands-on experience learning about the trucks and how to fight fires with the hoses. Before visiting the firehouse they learned about fires, types of fires, how to prevent them and what to do in an emergency. They have done Color Guards for the school in uniform and taught flag etiquette. They also went to the airport and visited the bomber that was there last year. Students who are interested are encouraged to join the United States Naval Sea Cadet Corps and participate in additional activities which are fun and educational. Marcia Powell, a teacher at Van Buren School is the volunteer leader of the group at the school. She also participates with the national organization.
